An Intern Gets a Little Worried....

Israel is now fighting a two front war. The army is deployed in Gaza and Lebanon. Cities in Northern Israel are being hit with Katyushas (long range rockets), including Safed, a city I visited not too long ago. At least 90 people have been wounded by the Katyushes. Hizbullah, (that's how we spell it at the Media Line) the terror organization which has been ruling Southern Lebanon since the mid 1980s is continuously launching these rockets which are killing and injuring people. Two more soldiers were also kidnapped by Hizbullah,Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev. Hamas still has Corporal Gilad Shalit from over two weeks ago.

Israel has been retaliating by bombing strategic points in Lebanon, including the big story this morning—the International Airport in Beirut.

It's a little hard to be optimistic right now about being in Israel. It feels too close to home with these rockets falling in the North. Hizbullah threatened to bomb Haifa if the Israeli Army goes into Beirut.

I spent the day writing a background piece on the history of the relations between the terror groups in Southern Lebanon and Israel. I know a lot more about what's going on right now but I don't have time to write about it. The point is Hizbullah is a really dangerous terror organization with weapons and funding coming from Syria. Last night there were rumours that Israel was also going to invade Syria to cut off the source and that there would be a three front war.

I've never seen such heightened security in Jerusalem. The Square across the street is now cordoned off so everyone has to walk in a small entrance and pass by two border police guards. My roommate said that this is perfectly normal during a time of heightened security but since this is my first time here for an extended period of time, it still looks weird to me.

Last night I was going to go to the film festival again but after I heard what happened I opted to go to Gerald Steinberg's political science class instead. He's an expert on the Mideast situation and constantly being interviewed by newspapers. He lectured on all of Israel's options at this point and to tell you the truth, I left the class pretty alarmed.

It's going to be an interesting birthday weekend!

Liana,

Happy birthday! It seems that the situation over there is getting really serious. As you said, Israel is fighting on two fronts now. I wonder whether this can escalate to yet another war in the region. What is the consensus over there? Any chance it can be reversed soon, or…?

This is a terribly frightening time for the middle east. As much as I am over simplifying the issues, I am not sure why violence must be answered with violence. I've heard from both sides during some of my travels and the response to finding more diplomatic solution is simply "you don't know, because you don't live here." Valid point, but that still does not bring anyone closer to resolution. Both sides seem to point to past injustices and all I can wonder is if people really think that revenge is going to make anything more peaceful at the end of the day. Clearly the three soldiers, probably very frightened young men, are not going to be released with increased bombings, nor will the Israelis release any political prisoners.

Somehow I did remember that your birthday will be tomorrow (same day as my dad's - funny the things you remember from H&T 2004). Wow...LOTS of news stories concerning Israel the last few days. The last time I wrote to you, I mentioned that there had only been one or two short stories updating the status of Israel in the "World" section, where as now it is front cover each day with massive sized pictures, in all newspapers that I've seen. Very nervous having you, along with many friends from Birthright still over there, along with the soldiers I've come to be friends with who are presently at war.

What a strange feeling to have left Israel only a couple of days before the soldier was taken captive. To have had such a strong connection while I was there to the land and the people, I feel as if the terrorists are attacking my land! I feel enraged at all those who aren't with Israel and cannot comprehend the mentality of those terrorists! I say this after hearing on the radio about a Muslim rally going on in Montreal today.  One of the main leaders of this rally commented (in rebuttle to the radio announcer bluntantly saying something like 'what can you possibly protest? the terrorists are so evidently the aggressors in this case").  His response started with "This goes back 50 years.." -

Liana, this will make you into an excellent journalist, but I will be in constant fear for your safety until you return back to Montreal. Please be safe, don't take too many risks, and write constantly to inform us about what's going on there.
