IBC Today Field Journalist

An Intern's Recap of the Week

This has been quite the week to be in Israel. While it cannot be called a full out war, probably the best way describe what is going on now is as an intense, armed conflict between Israel and Hizbullah.

The fighting is continuing, people are dying and rockets are still falling in Israel. Yesterday two Arab-Israeli children were killed in Nazareth, showing that Hizbullah’s aim is not always accurate, but always deadly.

The film crew at The Media Line went out on Tuesday to northern Israel to take footage of the rockets as they fell. I did not have the option to go but considering I do not want to induce heart attacks on my parents, I think it was a good idea to stay back at the office. The film crew returned with a scrap of metal from a Katyusha rocket that had landed in a field. This sharp piece of gnarled metal is only as big as my fist but just holding it in my hand, I could feel its weight and how much destruction it could cause as just a tiny piece of a large rocket.

The piece of metal that I touched is only one way that I have been affected by this week’s events. Luckily, I’m safe and not affected directly but I can feel it through people around me. My roommate at the dorms, however, has to worry as her cousins and family in Israel are called up to North. In Israel there is mandatory conscription for all males between 18-21 (females serve 21 months). After their three-year service, they serve in the reserves and can be called up until age 42. This week three more battalions of reserves were called up, meaning a lot of families are now hoping their sons, brothers and fathers are going to be okay.

Many people in Jerusalem have also opened their homes to residents fleeing the north of the country. It is not uncommon to hear that so-and-so is hosting a 9 person family from Haifa who may or may not be related to them.

My weekend is going to be spent in the south of the country. While there are still qassam rockets being launched into the south from Gaza, unless they develop a longer range one tonight, I should be out of the heat on my trip to Beer Sheva and Yeruham. Have a good weekend and thanks to everybody for thinking of me and wanting me to be safe.

It's hard for me to know exactly how I feel about these current conflicts in the Middle East. It seems obvious that what is going on in Lebanon and Gaza isn't about getting abducted soldiers home. At first glance I see Israel as the evil aggressors, perpetuating the violence, bombing civilians and killing children. But at the same time, as the U.S.A. so likes to remind us, "Israel has the right to defend herself."
I know if Canada was being bombarded by rocket attacks daily, I would want our government to find those responsible and do what needs to be done. Luckily I'm not in the situation where I have to condone such behavior. It really surprised me when I heard a poll stating that 90% of Israelis agree with the actoin being taken against Lebanon. But how does one fight an enemy who could be anybody, anywhere. Do you bomb everybody? It seems that's what Israel is doing now, and I don't doubt it will end up blowing up in their own faces.

Dear All,

I feel compelled to write a message today, as the news about the Lebanese Israeli border is alarming. There are a few interesting clips by the CBC on the subject. People in Lebanon have not chosen to be at war and the mass exodus of thousands of people (and especially foreigners) might be a sign that a bigger plan is actually taking shape.

For more details about what normal people really think in Lebanon.

Obviously not everyone is siding with Hizbollah. Some people, unfortunately, don't get the chance to flee or they may not want to abandon their beloved homeland. As for Israel I personally think it is a crime to use such disproportionate forces. Israel has always had US backing in International Politics. Condoleezza Rice rejects the possibility of a ceasefire. South of Lebanon was occupied for 22 years and what Hezbollah has done is now taking the country back to its painful Past. Once more in this part of the world, History repeats itself.

One then wonders what is the utility or the relevance of having International Institutions such as the United Nations.

Interestingly enough Protests against Israel are breaking out in Venezuela, Mexico and today Berlin in Germany.

In Montreal where I live I have seen people hanging out with a Lebanese flag and I know of some demonstrations taking place here in Canada.

Journalists are showing the massacre and the evacuation of innocent civilians. Casualties add up on both sides and people claim to be carrying out holy wars. I think a true religious person is a person who wishes for peace.

Nevertheless the crisis seems far from being resolved!

Liana I will look into your article on the medialine.org, the website is great by the way and I think it does a good job at helping outsiders understand the Middle East.
